Some of us use it in our daily lives. But what really is magic? Well, the formal definition of magic is something like this: Magic is the performance of illusions meant to entertain, baffle and amaze. The purpose of magic is to give the illusion that the impossible or supernatural has been achieved. Although magic deals with the illusion of the supernatural, no ghostly beings or entities actually have any part in a magic act. Truly entertaining magic is always done by a skilled performer who knows how to use natural means to create the impression that something next to impossible has been done.

Early magic was most likely probably used for cheating in gambling games such as cards or in times of war like the use of the Trojan Horse. But during the 18th magic became less of a series of seemingly pointless deceptions and more of a respectable activity done by professional illusionists.

The earliest recorded modern practice of magic tricks was done by Jean Eugene Robert Houdin in the mid-1800s. In fact, many consider Houdin the father of modern magic. Houdin, originally a trained clock worker, switched to the practicing of magic when he opened a magic theater in Paris in the 1840s. Houdin's special magic trick of the time was creating small mechanical pieces that seemed to move and act as if they were alive.

After that the popularity of magic continued to grow. In 1873 two men, British performer J. N. Maskelyne and his partner Cooke established their own theatre, the Egyptian Hall in London England's Piccadilly. The magic tricks these two men were best known for performing were hiding special mechanisms in their stages to control audiences' points of view. So, the magic was in people and items suddenly disappearing and reappearing, or being distorted in some way.

The late 19th century brought on celebrity magic and celebrity musicians. This was the time of the world-famous Harry Houdini, whose real name was Erich Weiss. Houdini's magic tricks were based on the ability to escape impossible situations. Today this term is referred to as escapology.

Depending on whom you talk to today, magic is a trivial passtime for children, or magic can be a real source of entertainment. At least that was the common attitude towards magic in the 1980s and 1990s.

Today magic seems to be in vogue again. But most modern workers of magic follow a strict code of ethics. For example, those who perform on television don't use camera tricks and videotape editing to create the illusion of powerful magic. Magic workers today use only traditional forms of magic. This means they use the same forms of magic for television as they would for a live magic show.

The old saying about magic being smoke and mirrors is true. The art of magic tricks is all about fooling the audiences' eyes and getting them to think they are seeing something that really isn't happening. That's what true magic and the practice of good magic tricks is all about.
Although you typically see some of the finest magicians and illusionist performing incredible feats, you too can impress family and friends with basic tricks. You might not expect to perform on the same level as David Blaine or David Copperfield but with commitment and the right resources, you can do some amazing things. The great thing about magic is that even some of the simple tricks are fascinating and often difficult to figure out to the person watching.

If you are interested in learning a magic trick, you first need to understand the basic rules. Remember, part of any magic trick is the way in which it is performed, meaning keeping mystery alive. However, if you do not capture the respect of the people by taking time to learn the trick but also practice the trick until you have it down to a fine art, part of the effect and integrity are lost.

For starters, even if the magic trick is simple, never tell anyone how you did it. Keeping your trick a secret is what makes it so exciting. Once you get your magic trick perfect, people will ask how you did it. At this point, you need to be polite but firm, stating something as ?Sorry, I never give out my secrets.? Usually, people will back off or rib you a little but on occasion, you might have someone that pushes the issue. If this happens, simply remind yourself that keeping the magic trick secret is part of the game.

Another important rule associated with magic is to perform only when conditions are optimal. In other words, if you were to go to a party and someone were to mention that you do magic, choose only the tricks that you know you can do spontaneously. Although it might be tempting to start doing trick after trick, becoming bolder with each, know your limits. This way, you can impress people with just one or two magic tricks rather than bomb by a failed attempt at the third or fourth trick.

The key, even with family and friends, is to leave people wanting to see more. As with anything, be humble, allowing the magic trick to speak for you rather than brag about how great you are, only to make a major mistake. If you were interested in building a career with magic, knowing when to stop and when to keep going is a fine line that needs to be learned. As stated, it would be far better to know one magic trick to perfection than to know 20 so-so. In time, you can expand on this one magic trick, learning a second, and a third, also perfecting them.

To become good with any magic, even the basics, you need to dedicate time to practice. Most magic tricks use sleight of hand, movements so precise and quick that the eye does not see them. The result to the audience is having the belief that some amazing thing just happened. However, to reach this point, even if you have just one magic trick, you will need to spend months honing your skill. To be successful with any magic trick, never compromise your standards.
Remember being mystified by the tricks and illusions that you really thought were magic. Remember being told that all magicians were sworn to secrecy about how they performed their 'magic'?

Well with the internet it's easy now to find out exactly what they did and even learn how to do it for yourself.

You can imagine being in front of an astounded audience (who can't guess how you do it) and perform those same illusions that you have seen all the famous name magicians performing time and time again. Wouldn't that be great.

This is just one of my favourites that you can learn and repeat dozens of times:

Numerical Prediction

You produce a sealed envelope and announce that it contains a numerical prediction. Placing the envelope on the table for the moment, you hand a small piece of card and a pen to a spectator and ask them to write a number between 1 and 1000 on the card.

This done, the first spectator hands the card and the pen to another spectator and you invite them to do the same, writing their number below the first one. This is repeated with a third spectator before the pen and card are retrieved.

The card, pen and sealed envelope are handed to a fourth spectator who is asked to total the three numbers written on the card. When he's done this he opens the sealed envelope to find that your prediction matches the total of the three numbers.

All you need to do is make sure the people you involve are seated well apart and you have another identical card which you have already written numbers on. Then a quick replacement switch and you're a mind reader!

Peter Fisher is an expert Author and Publisher. Want to be able to impress others at parties or in the bar and get instant VIP treatment? The trick is the mechanical detail of the effect; to be a Magician, you have to PERFORM!

You have to turn the Magic Trick into a Magical Effect. Make your audience believe that you just did the impossible - however simple you know the trick to be, the effect on your audience is what matters. They have to believe that you just produced a card out of thin air, made a coin enter a sealed can of Coke, restored a torn up newspaper - whatever the trick - if your audience don't believe that you actually did it, you have failed.

One of the best ways is to weave a story around the magic trick. I once saw a famous magician slide a knot off a piece of rope and make it disappear. Very slick. He picked up the rope, tied a knot and then ran his hand down the length of the rope and the knot had vanished. 5 seconds in the middle of an hour long stage show. I forgot about the trick until some years later when a close-up performer did the same trick for me. He took 5 minutes over it; told a story about Harry Potter walking along a river bank and meeting an old sailor who challenged him to a knot tying contest ... the effect was somewhat embellished but basically the same trick, and I remembered it - use it myself, now!

The point is; make it interesting rather than clever; better yet, make it amusing if you can. The public know that there is no such thing as Magic (well, OK - MOST of them know it ... there are a few odd-balls out there!) and so they realise, at the back of their minds, that we are fooling them. No one likes to be fooled but they will forgive you if you amuse them, entertain them, at the same time.

You don't have to be Tommy Cooper; it would not be a good thing if the entire Magic profession suddenly turned into comediens! Lighten your act; throw in a few jokes at appropriate points, perform some comical effects amid the more 'serious' ones. Above all, remember that you are an entertainer; try not to make your act a showcase for your own cleverness. Entertain and amuse your audience and they will want more. Prove to them how clever you are and they will clap but not care if they don't see you again.

The Magic Trick is just the method. The Magical Effect is the performance of that method in an entertaining and convincing way. If you 'do magic tricks', you are a technician; perform Magical Effects and you are a Magician.

Andy Canning has created a Website for fellow magicians - amateur or professional - at http://www.magic.4funandprofit.co.uk where he offers free magic tricks for you to learn and sources for all your magical needs.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-846787334468839385.post-3829038842652874112012-05-02T05:43:00.002-07:002012-05-02T05:43:55.937-07:00Tips On How To Do Magic Tricks For Free!I?m often asked what the best way to start to learn how to do magic tricks would be, and although it can be different from person to person, I?m sure I can provide a few hints and tips that may help and probably more importantly, - what you should try to avoid.

I think the most important thing to do when just starting to dabble in magic, is to learn a few simple magic tricks that can be done without having to use any gimmicked apparatus or special props. I mean magic tricks that can be done using ordinary items that can often be borrowed and handed out for examination after the miracle has been performed.

This can be really stunning for any lay audience, as they are so used to seeing magic tricks and illusions on TV and video, where fancy and often expensive props are used and also where camera tricks and clever editing are used to create a more exciting TV program.

I?m sure you?re well aware that most magic can be purchased from reputable magic suppliers and you?ll also know that the cost of most magical secrets is usually very high. (Often very expensive)

So how can you possibly learn how to do magic tricks without spending a great deal of money for these secrets and when most top magicians will just not explain how their magic tricks are done.

Most magicians first started to do magic tricks after receiving a small magic set, but unfortunately the typical magic set is usually made up totally of ?self-working? tricks, with trick cards and boxes etc., none of which can be examined by the audience after the trick has been shown, and so there?s the problem and worry of having to hide your tricks as soon as you finish each one.

For a beginner this creates a problem, especially among friends and classmates, who are always desperate to examine the magical props and try to find out ?how it?s done?.

So that?s why I suggest learning some simple magic tricks with ordinary everyday objects that can often be borrowed and then freely handed out for examination. Ordinary everyday items like coins, pens, banknotes and such like, appear to be beyond any suspicion of trickery and doing magical things with them is so very effective and yet often very simple.

This really adds tremendously to the magic and of course, as most professional magicians will tell you, - ?the simple effects are the ones that are usually the most stunning to the audience and in my experience, get the best response?.

Some of the best items to use to amaze your friends are coins, banknotes, pens, rope etc. and there are a few basic skills that are so easy to learn and will very quickly allow you to vanish and exchange coins and several small objects.

One of these basic skills is known as the ?French Drop?, which is what all magicians use to vanish and exchange small items like coins, keys, balls etc. So I would certainly recommend that one of the first things that you should practice, as a beginner, is just that (French Drop) and coupled with the simple Palming of a coin.

This will allow you to carry out a nice magic routine with borrowed coins etc. and will leave you ?Clean? at the end of the effects. It will also get you out of difficulty when you are expected to do something magical.

This is magic that requires no props or fancy apparatus and there are now many great magical Websites where you can learn hosts of magic tricks for free.

In fact I set up my own Magic Website with the soul purpose of passing on my experience and knowledge to help all those eager would-be magicians to enjoy the sheer joy and pleasure of performing magic and entertaining others.

So in today?s digital Internet world you can get some amazing and exciting magic for free if you just search for and visit the right magic websites. ? So go ahead and look around and welcome to the wonderful world of magic.
In fact, when researching the history of card magic tricks, you will find that card tricks were among the first illusions to make its way to the limelight. Some believe that the era of poker and the activity of cheating in a poker game are partly, or mostly, the reason card tricks and illusions were practiced in the first place.

Enough of the boring history lesson and on with the many card tricks that are well known today. One of the oldest magic tricks yet still enjoyed by many is the "Pull the cards from the air" trick. For this trick you only need a few cards, not a whole deck. First off, you hold the cards in your palm in a horizontal position. Then, while gripping the cards firmly use your thumb to flick out the top card. Continue the same motion to grab the card and flip the card up and show off to your audience. Just make sure when you go to flip the card up for your onlookers to see that you thrust out your hand a little bit, as if you were pulling it out of the air itself. Ta da! You have performed one of many awesome magic tricks.

Next on the list is the old and still favored trick of the torn up card that gets restored. You begin with a little bit of preparation for your card trick. Rip off a little bit, about a fourth, of a playing card that is the same suit and color as the card that you want to appear to be destroyed.

You start by taking the card you and folding it into fourths. Let your audience know that this step makes it easier to tear the card evenly. The extra torn card piece should be placed on the side of the card that is facing you and held there by your thumb. Then you rip the card from the top middle to the center following the crease you made earlier but don't fully rip it off.

Be sly about it and slide the extra ripped piece up casting the illusion that that is the piece that was ripped off. Do that same move over and over again, each time showing off the extra torn piece as the piece that has been ripped off, all the while never ripping the card that had initially been folded. Then you can fan out the semi-ripped card to show to your audience.

Ask a volunteer to grab the pieces of torn card then set it on the table while you slip the extra piece out and hide it somewhere. Now the members of your audience can inspect all they want because the card is completely whole.

There are many other awesome magic tricks using cards as the main prop and you can enjoy plenty of them by searching on the internet. So go ahead and practice your awesome magic tricks and show off to your friends what you have learned!

Michael is an expert magician who has been performing as a professional magician for more than 20 years. Well, you can also make your own magic tricks; all you need is to comprehend every basic magic tactics.

Most of the people think that magicians have a lot of magic tricks, but on reality there are only a few of it. The author of The Trick Brain named Dariel Fitzkee says that, there are only nineteen essential effects which oversee all the magic tricks and illusions. And all of these rely on the magical tools that a magician has. Most of the items you will see are true but greater part of it are due to the magicians tricks and faked magical effects.

Among the nineteen magical effects of every magician only three are the basic steps to oversee the rest. A magic trick is composed of the following: camouflage, secret movement, mechanical and transformation. A camouflage trick is one of the most fundamental tricks of a magician. From the smallest up to the biggest apparatus that they use, an object will look smaller and the viewer might be amazed on how did the magician do it; it is the power of using camouflage trick. This kind of trick is use to hide or make things disappear by simply covering it up with the aid of some people.

If you wonder why an object appears and disappears in just a snap of the magician's fingers, then this is what the magicians call a secret movement. Like for example a magician raises an empty box to the audience, as he closes the door a certain screen would drop down and when he opens it again you will be seeing lions, horses or even a dog that would appear. The most common trick among the magic is the floating card, wherein a magician will spin cards to his body and then floats it between his hands. Viewers will then get amazed about the trick but if they only knew that it is the invisible thread that governs the movement of magician's body, then surely they will not be stunned. As a viewer all you need to do is to give a keen observation in every movement so you can see the trick.

The last trick will be the mechanical transformation. It comes with various samples, like when a magician takes a blue scarf from his hand and then pass it through something or to a tube, when comes out it turns red or it will transform to any shapes. Basic magic tricks are simple to understand if and only if you are interested upon doing it so. By the help of the three basic steps mentioned earlier, you can now propagate your own magic tricks as you wanted that would appear as unique as a professional magician.

For more information about Magic Tricks feel free to visit http://magichutonline.com
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-846787334468839385.post-55972406038778780192012-03-04T11:51:00.000-08:002012-03-04T11:52:19.339-08:00Learn a Magic Trick!
I've never considered myself particularly clever. I'm not very good at figuring out how things work, but I have always been curious. Something that never failed to catch my attention was magicians, and how they perform their amazing tricks. After a lot of wondering, I finally took action and did something about it. Surprisingly, it was a lot easier to learn a magic trick than I would have thought.

Believe me, if I can do it, anyone can.

It turns out there are only two main things to remember. The first is to remind yourself that what you are doing is really just acting. You have to be aware that you are a showman on a stage, so the way you comport yourself is very important. You've got everyone's attention, you should show your confidence and prowess with a loud voice and grand, sweeping gestures.

The next thing to remember is what trick you are doing. This is actually the easy part, if you've taken a little time to learn a magic trick already. You should have the trick practiced enough that you can do it almost without thinking. As I said, most of your energy will be spent on how you act, so it's important to have an illusion that you are very comfortable with.

The best way to be sure that you can perform under pressure is to learn it well. Sometimes this takes a lot of practice, but in other cases you can expect to learn a magic trick in only a few attempts. Some of the most convincing illusions fall into this category. A good teacher helps, too. Study from Bryan Dean, the author Learn Easy Magic. He teaches some of the most convincing tricks around. Here's how to make some easy money out of them with a simple card trick. Start by asking someone to pick any card from the deck, show the rest of the people in the room and then slide the card back into the pack. You shuffle the deck and then start turning the cards over one by one until you see the card that your friend choose. At this point you bet everyone in the room a certain amount of money, perhaps $1 or $5, that the next card you turn over will be the one that was originally selected.

As the selected card has already been turned up, at least one of your friends will assume that they can't lose and accept the bet.

Once the bet is made, you simply turn over the card on top of the pile of cards that have already been revealed and collect your winnings.

The Explanation: Right, for all of you who can't figure out how to do this trick, here's what happens.

Take a normal pack of playing cards, shuffle them well, fan them out and ask one of your friends to pick a card. At this stage it doesn't matter what card they select. Unlike many card tricks you don't have to use sleight of hand to force them to choose the card of your choice.

Once they've taken a card, it's a good idea to ask them to show it to the rest of the people in the room. This will increase the chances of someone accepting your bet later on. After everyone except you has seen the card, shuffle the rest of the pack, cut it in the middle and let the person return their card to the pack.

This is the key to the trick. When you separate the pack to let them return the card, take a subtle look at the card that will be placed on top of their card when you put the pack together. Make sure nobody sees you doing this. This is where the ability to keep talking to distract your audience comes in useful.

Once you've placed the pack together, cut the deck a number of times, making sure that you take note of the bottom card after the last cut. If it's the card that was on top of the selected card cut the pack once more. This will make sure that your card is put back on top of the selected card.

Put the deck face down on the table and start turning the cards over one by one. Keep going until you see the card that you made a note of appear and then turn one more card (this will be the card that was originally selected by your friend). Make it look as though you're about to turn the next card, then stop and bet anyone in the room a certain amount of money that the next card you turn over will be the one that was initially chosen.

As soon as somebody accepts the bet, turn the selected card face down and collect your winnings.

To learn more easy magic tricks, visit Lucas Da Silva's site at www.SuperMagicTricks.com.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-846787334468839385.post-80454555921805112112012-02-21T06:37:00.001-08:002012-02-21T06:37:38.136-08:00Magic Tricks And Kids - A Great Combination
It's always enjoyable performing magic tricks for an appreciative audience. Once you get a few magic tricks under your belt, you'll be hooked on performing your craft because there is something really rewarding when a well executed magic trick leaves your audience in disbelief and applauding all at the same time... and that's the real magic.

The element of doubt in the mind of your audience is the key to a good magic trick. Just a dab of doubt and you can see the people in your audience start to question their rational... and for that moment the illusion is truly magical.

Being in touch with your audience is the showmanship part of the magic trick and is vitally important. It is also the most fun part as a performer. The look in their eyes, their laughter all make it worthwhile.

When you first start out performing magic tricks, there is a good chance that the bulk of your audiences will be comprised of children. In the eyes of the kids your tricks will truly be magical and the look of the faces and the giggles from the children are a reward like no other.

A child's imagination and the art of a magic trick are a wonderful combination. A child's imagination is a wonderful enhancement to any magic trick. It's that unique and innocent perception of the world that kids have that make performing magic tricks for them all the more rewarding.

Even something as simple as the disappearing coin trick will have kids giggling with joy as you first make the coin disappear then reappear from one of the children's ears. They'll love and beg you to do even more with them! And if you can't get hooked on the innocent reaction of children then you can't get hooked at all.

The best part about performing magic tricks for kids is that kids just know how to be kids... after all that's exactly what they are. And magic to kids is just that... magic. I mean... after all... what is the major draw to Disney World for kids... well... Magic Kingdom... of course!

If you are just taking up learning a few magic tricks, an audience full of kids is a great way to get started. And even though you may decide to take your magic tricks to even higher heights, you'll never have a better audience than a room full of young children.

So don't worry about starting small... as in kids... you'll probably find that you'll always enjoy working your magic with the kids.

For more information on magic tricks be sure to visit http://www.magic.web-sitings.com where you will find advice and tips on card tricks, coin tricks, magic spells, and how you can start dazzling your audiences.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-846787334468839385.post-63849881625551575332012-02-21T06:29:00.001-08:002012-02-21T06:29:53.289-08:00Online Marketing Guru Tricks - How They Do Their Magic Tricks
If you ever were to look in a top marketer?s closet do you ever wonder what you would find? I mean his business closet of course. You see, since I became an online marketer I got to see how the magic tricks were done. Let me share with you my observations.

Next time you see a marketer just think of him as an encyclopedia of tricks & techniques. Usually there made up of only that. This is shown all over their campaigns when you look at their landing pages & promotional material. It?s all tricks & info here & there that were given to them and told it converts well. Most of the stuff isn?t even coming from them aside perhaps their profile photo.

Here?s what I?ve seen them use.

> EMAILS PROMOTIONS

These messages are right on the border of spam just if you hadn?t signed up to their list. They then take advantage of your email for the chance to blast you with the latest best using every trick in the book to make you ?convert? into a sale. Most marketer?s consider their subscriber base as numbers and digits (I can hear them saying ?hey can you guys send that $200 promotion to list 43 and make sure the site background is blue?).

Ways to avoid? Simple. Subscribe and get off their list if every day seems like a repeat of yesterday?s super offer. The unsubscribe process is easy and they don?t sell your email to anyone. Don?t get sucked into their tricks and purchase blindly in result.

I can love my product, talk about it and want people to use it because of the difference it makes but I?m not going to send them to sales pages telling me that they only have until midnight EST tomorrow night to the price goes up. I know this is the sense of urgency technique but there is a limit to how much it can be used and it is used too much.

So in summary choose only honest and integral marketer?s that have an interest in helping you win opposed to bank wasting perfectly good paper to print and mail you your account bills.

Some won?t catch on to these tricks in the beginning and you might probably make a reasonable amount of money but it?s just a matter of time before the people see right through you and see your objections and agenda for being in business (money being the sole priority I mean).

This is a new business approach & will continue to produce massive results.

Success with Dorian Oddi. Design the way you want to live and the goals you want to achieve and let me show you the exact clear cut path to getting there.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-846787334468839385.post-64838792931637087422012-02-21T06:28:00.000-08:002012-02-21T06:29:12.369-08:00Hire a Magician ? Definitions and Tips
For a lot of people the last time they wanted a magician at their party was when they were 8 years old but magicians dont just work for children. Adults have always been a great audience for magic because they have defined critical thinking. They know it isnt real magic but if the performer does his job right he can bring about the childlike state of wonder in an adult. A good magician can bring you right back to experience the fuzzy feeling you had as a kid when your grandfather pulled a coin out of your ear.

There are 3 types of magic that are most often hired for events where adults are in the majority.

Close-up magic (the most popular choice for people hiring magicians)

Cabaret shows

Drawing room shows

Close-up magic is often seen at cocktail parties where the magician mingles amongst the guests performing miracles with borrowed objects and simple objects he has on him. He works without a table and uses people hands when he needs to. This is an excellent choice if all the guests will be standing with drinks and eating finger food.

Another type of close-up magic that is closely related to strolling magic is table magic. Table magic is performed between the courses at dinners, wedding breakfasts, balls and banquets. You are more likely to see a short (between 3 8 minutes) mini cabaret act that has a structured feel to it. The magician may use the table but it will be as unobtrusive as possible because at banquets there is a premium on table real estate.

Close-up magicians are being hired more and more for Trade Shows to draw people to the stand with customised magic presentations. Presentations are designed to showcase the features and benefits of the stand they are representing but with amazing magic and not just dry sales pitches.

Cabaret Shows are a great way for a lot for people to see some great magic in a relatively short space of time. Often a close-up magician who has performed strolling/table magic before hand will also do a 20 minute cabaret act after dinner.

There are many different styles of cabaret magician - comedy, traditional manipulation act to music, mind reading etc. The type of event you are organizing will dictate the type of cabaret magician you will require. If you would like lots of audience participation and laughter go for a comedy magician, if there will be lots of non-English speakers present then go for a visual act like the manipulator and if it is a very business orientated environed maybe a mind reader would be more suited.

You also see cabaret magicians at comedy clubs, cruise ships and also occasionally at motivational events where the magic is combined with a motivational speech.

Drawing room shows were almost a dead art for nearly a 100 years. They were immensely popular with the Victorians where the gentry would all gather to watch a conjurer perform magic. In recent years it is coming back into fashion at private parties where a magician may perform after dinner for 30 minutes or so. This is a taste of days gone by and is close enough for apparently no shenanigans to be going on yet far enough away to use larger effects for everyone to see. This kind of show is most related to a cabaret show but the effects are smaller and it is more interactive as the audience in only a few feet away.

When choosing a professional magician it is important to choose wisely as in any industry there are cowboys.

Questions you may like to ask any prospective performer you are engaging are...

How long have you been a professional?

Some magicians may seem great on paper but as all know paper doesnt refuse ink. Experience is the key in this industry so make sure they have cut their teeth.

Can I see you perform?

The answer depends on the type of performer you are considering engaging. If its a cabaret magician he may well work at comedy clubs where you can go and see him perform and close-up magicians often work at hotels, restaurants and bars as the resident entertainer several times a week. If its open to the public then go and see them work. However if the performer works mainly at corporate events, weddings and/or trade shows you may find it impossible to see him work live as these are closed events.

Have you got a brochure/video I can see?

Most professional performers will have promotional kits including photographs, video and brochure. A good promo kit doesnt mean they are a good magician, it may just mean they know somebody who works at a printing press. A cheap and tatty looking promo kit doesnt definitely mean the performer is bad, but it does show a lack of professionalism and that is a warning sign. In this day and age some performers have no hard copy for promotional use as it dates so quickly so there website acts as the brochure. If the website looks like it was made from cut outs of magazines then they are not interested in making a good first impression. Would you trust somebody who didnt make a good first impression at your event?

Does the price include VAT and any other charges?

When in negotiations dont forget to clarify if there as any other expense other than fee quoted.

What magic tricks do you do?

You should be able to gain a good idea of the style of the magician from any online or hardcopy brochure but if you want to know what kind of effects he/she performs go ahead and ask!

Are you a member of any magic societies or performer bodies?

Many magicians will be members of different magic clubs around the world. In the UK the most prestigious is the The Magic Circle where there are only 1500 hundred members world wide and you have to perform in front of experienced peers to gain membership. Again in the UK you will find many magicians are members of Equity the performs union which is another sign of their professionalism.

Have you got any referees I could phone?

This may seem like a reasonable question but a lot of magicians work mainly in the corporate area and are not permitted to pass out the contact details of their bookers. You should be able to see testimonials and letters from clients on the websites/brochures. Of course the best way is personal recommendation; ask friends if they have ever hired a magician.

Have you got public liability insurance?

This is crucial. The magician will be in close contact to your guests and maybe borrowing objects from them for effects. You dont want to end up with a magician who isnt covered!

I hope this all helps to give you a better idea of the different types of magic that are available for you to hire for your next event and what to look out for when hiring.

Noel Qualter

Noel Qualter - I'm a 28 year old full time professional close-up magician in London, UK. It's a sworn oath for magicians not to tell the audience how a trick is done. There are 3 secrets though that they've shared all throughout the years. Here are their 3 secrets.

The first secret is that some tricks are done through sleight of hand. These are ways with which they skillfully hide an object and make it reappear on another hand. New magicians hide things up their sleeves. Those are old tricks and very few used them now.

Sleights of hand require a lot of practice to master. Beginners of magic use specially created gimmicks to create the illusion. Professional magicians make use of their impressive sleight of hand. It requires a lot of time, patience and hand coordination to fully understand and do.

Another secret is the art of misdirection. See this blank paper? And as audience looks at the blank paper, he is carefully getting another piece with his other hand. This is misdirection. Another type of misdirection is the kind that doesn't let the audience see what's really causing the tricks. You might have seen that a magician has a lot of assistants who also do incredible stuff, but what you didn't know is that they are helping the magician perform the magic just with their presence.

Another kind of misdirection is the appropriate use of words. For example, a magician will tell you to look at the 'empty' box. We tend to look at the box as empty just because he said it. This causes our mind to wonder when the magician gets a rabbit out of it.

Misdirection takes a lot of practice and lots of time in planning. It requires body coordination (one body doing something while the other is doing another thing) and quick thinking. Misdirection is an art and magicians are proud of it.

Another secret is their patter or a magician's constant talk. Misdirection is achieved mostly because of patter. The magician will ask you to look at his right hand and as you are looking, you won't notice what his left hand is doing. This is a really clever way to achieve the illusion that what happens next becomes so magical with the wink of an eye.

Patter usually takes the form of a story, where a magician will tell you of something that happened to him someday. Sometimes it's so funny that we actually forget to look at what their hands are doing or what their assistants are giving them.

Preston Houer has been involved with the art of illusion and sleight of hand for over 30 years. What you do is make a thing disappear right in front of your audience. however because this trick don't use a lot of skill then you must do this trick with a short distance between you and your audience.

What you will need is just a tiny object, such as ball, paper, plastic or etc. You may use anything but they mustn't make any noise while they fell off.

This is the trick...

Take an audience, chit chat and then say "I'm going to make this ball disappear right in front of you only in count of three. Ready?" Grab the ball with your right hand and move it up and down, together with your count. "In One, Two and Three and there It's gone" While you said three, quickly throw the ball that you grab with your right hand to your back as for as possible.

And you won't have the ball anymore and your 'victim' won't find it either. The only negative side of this trick is, while you throw your ball to your back, other People will notice it and your secret will be discover.

My suggestion is move your feed from that place as soon as possible. There is no need to practice and no sleights needed.

Trick:

You predict a card without even touching the deck.

Method:

You hand a whole deck to your spectator and tell him to shuffle it. You then tell him to count 26 cards which is half of the deck. As he/she is counting, you remember the seventh card. Then tell him/her to set aside the 26 cards counted. You then write your prediction to a piece of paper. Next, tell him/her to pick any three cards from the other half. After that tell him to put the other half on top of the counted 26 cards. Put the three cards in a row order face up. Tell him for each card how many will he add to make it 10. For example the three cards are a six, seven, and a king. You will add four cards to six, three cards to seven and zero to king as it is considered 10 together with jack or queen. You then add the three cards: six + seven + 10 (king) = 27. You then tell the spectator to get the remaining cards face down and count until the 27th card is reached. The 27th card is the card you predicted.

Here is a another free card trick that requires a bit of preparation and practice. It can be done with a borrowed deck with a little misdirection to perform the flip.

Effect:

The spectator?s chosen card appeared to be different from the rest.

Explanation:

You setup the deck with all face down except for one card at the bottom. You spread the card asking your spectator to choose one card. Be careful not to reveal the face up card at the bottom. You tell your spectator to pick the card, look at it, and remember the card but as he does, you flip the cards over. So you have one card face down and the rest face up. You tell your spectator to put the cards somewhere in the middle of the deck. Be careful not to reveal all face up cards. Then tell your spectator that you will put all cards behind you and reveal your card within a split second. What will you do here is you just get the top card and reveal it. This is obviously not his card. You then spread the cards face up to reveal one card that is face down. This is your spectator?s card.

For more card magic, visit http://card-magic.blogspot.com.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-846787334468839385.post-80254701646610886042011-12-08T04:22:00.000-08:002011-12-08T04:23:54.006-08:00How to Learn Magic and Become a Magician
Is your dream to become a magician? Magic is something that has always fascinated me as an art form and also as a profession. But how do you become a magician, where do you start? This is probably the most common question that spectators ask when they meet a professional magician. Well this is my personal story as I don’t think there is set way of becoming a magician. For me, it all started with the amazement that magic generated in me whenever I watched magicians on TV or live shows. One of my older cousins also had an interest in magic and used to get catalogues from a magic dealer in France. The description of the effects that you could accomplish (after purchasing the props or technical book / video) was fascinating and the publicity even made it sound like it was pretty easy. I didn’t know anything about magic but that was how it all started for me. Back then, there was no such thing as internet – and there were only a handful of magic shops in France, charging a lot of money for the very special items they were selling on a real niche market. I first ordered a few magic tricks that I thought were a bit disappointing. Then I got my first magic book, called “The Magic Book”, by Harry Lorraine. The book had been translated into French which helped as my English was pretty basic at the time.

I highly recommend this book if you can get hold of it as it contains a great variety of material and techniques. Basic coin magic and card magic is covered but also some mentalism (mind magic) effects and general magic with everyday objects. As soon as I got the book, I started practicing very seriously, dedicating most of my spare time to the study of magic. I got my first pack of Bicycle Playing cards (made by the United States Playing Card Company or USPCC) and practiced most of the basic card techniques that are needed in order to perform the tricks that described in the magic literature. Once you have mastered about half a dozen of important card techniques, you can then learn hundreds of card routines created over the years by our magic community. Of course, I must point out that you do not need hundreds of card routines in your repertoire. The same applies to coin magic. Once you have learned the most important coin techniques, you can then learn the routines created by magicians. David Stone, David Roth, David Williamson are excellent coin magicians and I would highly recommend the material they have created. The two most common formats for learning magic are books or dvd. So which format should you go for?

Learning magic with DVDs is slightly easier and faster than from a book, and you can get a better idea of the timing for the performance of the effects. One of problems with DVDs though, is what we call the “clone effect”, or magicians copying exactly their source of knowledge even using the same patter as the inventor. Learning magic from a magic book on the other hand leaves more space for the imagination, and personalization of the effects.

I hope this will inspire you to start learning magic. It is great a hobby and can also become your profession if you are ready to spend the time practicing…

Frederic Sharp is a professional close-up magician based in the UK and performs table magic at private and corporate events:

http://www.sharpmagic.co.uk
http://www.magicien-closeup.com
http://www.manchestermagician.net
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-846787334468839385.post-88736296857816669352011-12-08T04:20:00.000-08:002011-12-08T04:21:20.182-08:005 Quick Tips For Beginning Magicians
If you are new to the world of magic and you're looking to improve the execution of your magic tricks then you've come to the right place. Follow these free tips and you'll start to improve your magic starting today.

Practice your palming skills wherever you go The most necessary skill of a person with a great sleight of hand is the ability or skill of palming an object that goes undetected. You could perfect this after some time of practicing palming small objects like coins in your everyday normal routine. You could palm a small object or item in both of your hands or either while writing, eating, watching TV, walking around, or doing other activities. If you practice care about the angles, no one would notice what you are doing, and after some time, what you are now doing self-consciously would later become almost natural to you. From then on, you could be able to palm objects or items more confidently, boldly, and successful each time.

Be Natural

The secret in having a great sleight of hand is your ability to be natural. There should be no shaky hands, no hand waving, jerky or quick motions. You should work naturally, deliberately, and slowly. If you master this, balls, coins, rings, cards, and coins will begin reappearing and disappearing at the tips of your fingers. Watching your angles

You should be aware of your angles. Angles refer to the sleight lines between the item that you have just palmed off and the eye of your spectators. If you do not have the right angles, the audience could take a glimpse or see the object in your hand and your trick will be caught.

Master your presentation

Practice your presentation. A small trick that is well presented could work wonders even without the most sophisticated of techniques since the audience would most likely relate to your trick or understand it.

What good is a magician if nobody understands or enjoys his or her tricks? The presentations therefore should be straightforward, simple, and understood easily so that your viewers or watchers could understand and enjoy the complete meaning of what you have been saying and doing.

Do not replicate a trick

This is a mistake MANY beginners make... Don't be one of them! Do not ever repeat the same trick for the same viewers or watchers. That is one of the basic rules in doing magic. When you repeat a trick, your audience would immediately know what you are going to do next. What may have been a miracle for you when you did your trick for the first time may not be quite satisfying or dazzling the next time around.

Ryan Even has been a regular speaker at magic conventions for years rubbing shoulders with the likes of David Copperfield, Criss Angel and David Blaine. Beautiful assistants. A crew of well trained exotic animals. You are intrigued by the magician?s life and have decided to give it a shot. Well, don?t be fooled by the magicians you see on T.V. There is more to the profession than that, and you need to learn it from all different perspectives in order to be a true success.

In addition to stunts and illusions, you need to understand the basics. Palming techniques. Small tricks. Not all of your shows will require you to use your big tricks. A true magician knows a combination of both, and knows them all well.

Here is what you need to know to become a magician.

Learn the Basics. Learning the basic techniques is very important. Simple card tricks, coin tricks, and small tricks with props like ropes and hats are good to learn. You can learn from a book, take a class, or learn from a DVD or instruction online. The methods you choose will depend largely on your learning style. Keep in mind that it can be very helpful to have an expert show you how to do it and critique your technique.

Get a Mentor. In your road to becoming a magician, getting a mentor can be a tremendous help. A mentor will not only teach you how to perform tricks and illusions, but will also assist you on the business side of being a magician. Most are self employed and are responsible for booking their own engagements. It can be a big help to also learn things such as marketing, etc from your mentor.

Go to School. Yes, there are magic schools. Some are part of clown school. Others are designed as enrichment programs in middle school and high schools. Attending a school that focuses completely on magic can help you learn quickly and put you on a schedule for success.

What Kind of Magician? What kind of magician do you want to be? Each successful magician out there has some kind of niche. Do you want to be a clown/magician? Would you like to do elaborate stunts? Or maybe you want to focus entirely on card tricks. It?s up to you. Once you define exactly how you envision your future career, you can take the steps necessary to achieve it.

Your Tricks. Each performing magician has not only a broad knowledge of their field, they also have a select amount of tricks that they master. Granted, depending on the performance, you will want to vary your lineup. However, if you have a few tricks you can depend on, it will make your job a lot easier.

Stage presence. Being a technical magician won?t get you far. You need to develop a stage presence. Each trick and illusion you learn needs to have a routine attached to it that will captivate the audience. You can be a mediocre magician and still entertain the crowd with your jokes and anecdotes. What truly matters is that your audience has a good time.

David Marc Fishman has started bornasuperstar.com. With the advent of latest technology, the profession of magicians has become more challenging. If a professional magician does not shake the beliefs of the onlookers and audience, he/she can never be considered as 'amazing' magicians. Though most of the top magicians will brush it off saying that it is never hard to perform onstage, the hard work that goes behind the onstage performance is very crucial. Decades before even a simple trick would have amazed the audience. But with increased awareness among the onlookers about the tricky techniques used by the magicians, none can pull a lousy magic trick. Imagine, the individual demonstrating the magic tricks must quickly and carefully surpass the suspicious eyes of the onlookers who watch out for any signs which will reveal the 'magic' of the trick. This instruction stands good for anyone who wishes to do even the simplest of magic tricks - be professional while performing the tricks. Mastering this art of expertise to gain control of the attention of the onlookers will require personal advice from the professional magicians and tons of practice.

Tips while Performing Magic Tricks:

Every magic trick has a scientific explanation behind it. But it is termed as 'magic' only because the audience are unable to fathom the reasons behind tricks. Anyone who wishes to be a magician by profession or just wants to perform the simpler tricks to entertain private audience, learning the tactics of professionalism is essential. Mastering the basic tricks completely before switching to the more complex ones will be very helpful. This is because if one knows the tactics of hiding their efforts while performing the magical tricks then they can proceed confidently into larger arenas. Constant practice is the key as it will be lousy if the magician fumbles with the tricks because he/she forgot the exact procedure.

Few Renowned Professional Magicians:

There are few magicians who awed the entire world with their magic tricks, some of which remain unsolved till date. Listed here are handfuls of those noted ones. Who can forget David Copperfield who made the Statue of Liberty disappear with thousands of audience witnessing the magic? Sigfried & Roy rocked the magical world with their white Siberian tigers. They continued to impress the crowds with their awesome magic all through their career for many years. David Blaine is also famous in the history of magic who had performed unsolved tricks with the cards and illusions which made many believe that perhaps 'magic' did exist. There are several others who may not have received the well publicized recognitions but they enthralled their audiences. The most commonly performed magic tricks by the professionals are making persons or places disappear momentarily, cutting people into half and joining them back, reading the mind of particular onlooker and so on.

Thus with a touch of professionalism, one can excel in magic tricks.

Ross Quadee, the author of many articles regarding Various topics is working on randy charach and you can find randy charach here. As everyone must be aware the cards and the coin tricks are the most popular ones in addition to the other assortments of magic tricks. The coin based tricks can be at times easier than those based on the cards as the individual should learn to handle the cards smartly. The shuffling of the cards in a desired manner to perform the trick is very essential. Sometimes the 'magician' has to manage the trick by working on 2 -3 cards while pretending to fiddle only with one card. But some cards can be modified specially of the magic tricks, like covering one half of the card with half of another card etc. Some of the famous magic tricks of the magic kits are Vanishing coin trick, Eggcup trick, and the Broken Pencil trick. In short, these magic kits contain items specially designed to do the 'magic' like the ball connected to the string which stops at one's word and continues at 'Go'. The trick is the string is designed such a way that the person saying 'stop' stretches the string tightly at that moment and the ball stops. On relaxing the grip, the ball continues to move down.

Disappearing Coin Trick

The same trick of making a coin 'disappear' as the audiences are witnessing it can be done in several ways. Suggested here is one such manner in which a glass, colored paper and handkerchief is used. The glass has to be pasted with the colored paper exactly matching the shade of the sheet over which the glass is placed upside down. The trick is to place a coin on the colored sheet and inform that the coin is going to disappear. After displaying the presence of the coin, cover it with the handkerchief. While pulling out the handkerchief, move the glass over the coin without anyone noticing it. And lo! The coin would have 'disappeared' under the magical kerchief.

Reading One's Mind

This can be easy with prior preparation and careful steps to hide the actions from the onlookers. Use a clear tape to be wound around the thumb with the sticky part outside. A piece of lead can be carefully placed on the inner side of the thumb, stuck to the tape. Pretend to write on a paper initially while nothing is being written. Have two boxes filled with cards containing shapes in one and numbers in the other box. Ask one of the audience to pick one card from each, showing the onlookers the shape and the number they have selected. Surprise everyone by showing them the paper on which you had 'written' earlier which contains the shape and number chosen by the person. The trick is to jolt down the shape and the number on the paper with the lead as the person displays it to the audience but pretending to be watching them.

Ross Quadee, the author of many articles regarding Various topics is working on randy charach and you can find randy charach here.
